Luangwa House at a glance
Luangwa House is a private house with four large bedrooms with en-suite facilities. The house is uniquely designed with supports from twenty-five huge leadwood poles. The front of the house is open for incredible views of the lagoon system outside and the abundant wildlife that visits. Each of the four bedrooms is individually decorated and has a private veranda. Private staff including guide, chef and house manager will look after your group.
South Luangwa National Park is known for its dramatic river scenery, lagoons and a spectacular concentration of leopards. It is also a great place to see lion, wildebeest, buffalo, zebra, puku, impala and kudu, and many other species are found in great concentrations. Luangwa house is a five minute drive from its sister camp, Nkwali, and is on the southern side of the Luangwa River in a game management area (GMA). All the species found within the park occur here, and it is an exceptionally good area for the endemic Thornicroft giraffe and wild dog. Guests at Luangwa House access the park easily by pontoon, or boat via Nkwali.
The dry months are April until October and the wet season is from November until March. In winter, from June to August, the days are crisp, the skies are clear and game viewing is excellent. The temperature heats up in September through to November; it becomes hot and dry and the river becomes shallow. It’s a great time for predator viewing. November is the start of the rains, and it’s still a great time for game viewing and also viewing young animals. Migrant birds are plentiful at this time. Game drives are possible on all-weather roads and sightings of leopards and other predators are surprisingly good. The cloud build-ups are fantastic. Luangwa House is closed from mid-January to mid-March.
What Luangwa House costs
The house is booked on an exclusive basis, and rates range from $3800 to $4200 per night. Luangwa House is a 40 minute road transfer from the airstrip at Mfuwe.
Photographers need to know
Central Luangwa offers fantastic game viewing but is the busiest area of the park. Robin Pope Safaris guides, are some of the best, and pride themselves on giving people a very wild and un-commercial experience away from busy areas. This area combines well with other camps in the more remote Nsefu Sector and in the northern part of the park.
The good news
Robin Pope Safaris has a proud reputation in Zambia and Malawi. They have great and faithful staff and offer a really classic wildlife experience.
