Expect Warm, friendly hospitality at this relaxed informal hotel.

We will stay in a guest house in Niewoudtville. This town is the bulb capital of the world.  We will explore the fields of Papkuilsfontein and also explore the Hantam botanical gardens and the Kokerboom forest.

In Bushmanskloof we will enjoy some 5-star luxury and great food in a private game reserve in the Cedarberg Mountains. Bushman rock art, waterfalls, rock art and enjoying wildlife in the flowers are the highlight of our time here.

On the West Coast explore the flower fields of the Berg River.  In this area we will also explore the Postberg Reserve which has wonderful sea and flower vistas.

South Africa is well known for its floral diversity. The Succulent Karoo biome occurs in the western part of South Africa which experiences a low winter rainfall of between 20 and 290 mm a year.As less than 5% of the area is conserved it is a botanical hotspot with approximately one third of the world’s succullent plants many of which are red data species. The vegetation is dominated by dwarf plants of which the vygies and stone crops are particularly prominent. Mass flowering of annuals mostly daisies occur in spring often on degraded lands.

Nieuwoudtville is on a plateau and has 4 different biomes. In the fields there are 1 350 species of plants with more than 600 species growing in the the vicinity of the town. Forty of these plant species are endemic to the Bokkeveld and twenty two of them grow in and around Nieuwoudtville. The flower bulbs are known as geophytes and their diversity is unbelievable. In a small area around the town there are 309 different species of plants to be found. The bulbs are so plentiful that it is not uncommon to find up to 25000 bulbs or 50 different species of plants in a square metre of soil. At this density, a spade full of soil will contain more than a 100 bulbs.

On this trip we will practice various techniques as below. In addition to general photography, we will look at.
