The concession

Toya Leka lies in the western sector of Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, just 12 km from Livingstone and the Zambian side of Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya—The Smoke that Thunders. Wildlife can be viewed via boat on the Zambezi River or on game drives through the national park. Though small, the park attracts herds of elephant and buffalo, giraffe, hippo, crocodile, bushbuck, zebra, wildebeest, impala and even white rhino. Birding is productive, with special species including African finfoot, half-collared Kingfisher, Schalow’s Turaco and Rock Praticole along with many others.

The seasons

Chances of seeing game is highest during the dry season, June to October. Wet summers (November to April) bring migrant birds, lush vegetation and more water going over Victoria Falls. More water is not necessarily a good thing–lots of water means lots of spray that can obscure views. October and November can be very hot.

What Toka Leya costs

The rates at Toka Leya start at $400 per person per night including activities.

The good news

This is a Wilderness Safaris lodge and as with other companies in this large lodge group they have invested heavily in solar power and sustainable water treatment systems.

Photographers need to know

When the lodge is full, the lodge and restaurant area can become quite noisy and there are few break away areas.
