How it works
Choose one of these popular tours as is, or we can create a custom trip for you by mixing and matching any locations that catch your interest. We can help you every step of the way from designing your itinerary to hotel bookings to a custom photo tour specifically tailored to your interests. Our trips are designed to get you in the right locations at the right time for the best possible light–sunrise, sunset or midday depending on the location. We can provide tripods at no extra cost should you require. Rental gear is also available.
We meet you at your hotel or a designated destination and you will be guided by an expert photographer. Our driving tours also include a fully licensed driver/guide and transport catering to your group size and interest. However, if you would rather travel in your own car, our photographic experts can act as “hop on guides” and a discount can be arranged.
Multi-day tours and pricing are subject to accommodation availability and will be tailored, depending on the time of year, to ensure the best photographic experiences. Group discounts are sometimes available, however, we prefer to keep groups small, not more than 4 people, to ensure clients get individual attention.
We also offer private lessons to get you up to speed with your camera, demonstrate special techniques or help you master post processing in Lightroom. We offer full- or half-day workshops out of our well-equipped media centre in Muizenberg or can meet you at your desired location.
Our Photos & Africa Cape Town Tours and Workshops are hosted by expert photographic guides David Rogers, Morgan Trimble (award-winning photographer and PhD conservation scientist) or Jon-Erik Munro (art photographer and Lightroom expert) depending upon availability. You can read more about us here. We look forward to showing you our fantastic city, inspiring your photography and helping you get fantastic results.
Our experienced driver/guides Charlie Ratcliffe (expert birder and naturalist) and Cliff Rossenrode (great naturalist and photographer) are passionate about giving our guests the best experience. They take care of the transport so we can focus on photography.
You can expect the best of companionship, care and hospitality as well as outstanding photographic opportunities.
The weather in Cape Town
For us the best time to photograph Cape Town is during winter when the air is clean and fresh, the wind is not blowing and the fynbos is looking lush and green. Proteas and aloes are also in flower, and the sharks and whales are commonly seen in the bay. However, despite the wonderful clear lulls (the Champagne weather), you can also get vicious cold fronts that bring several days of consecutive rain. If that happens, you could say goodbye to the seascapes and day tours and hunker down with a bottle of wine on some wine farms. Springtime comes in late August and early September, and that brings wonderful opportunities with flowering plants. From November to February the Cape experiences fairly windy and usually hot conditions, although it’s still possible to get some rain even in December. February through to April brings wonderful weather.
Where to stay in Cape Town
If you are coming for a day or two, it’s a good idea to base yourself near the centre of town for quick access to the highlights such as Robben Island, Table Mountain and the V&A waterfront. But if you are staying a bit longer then perhaps consider a stay in Constantia or Steenberg where there are some very sophisticated hotels in the quieter Wineland areas. Both areas have excellent restaurants. We can help you plan your stay.
Photographic equipment in Cape Town
If you need gear while in Cape Town, we can help you with rentals. Orms Photographic in Roeland Street 021 465 3573 and Cameraland in Long Street (021 423 4150) are the two leading photographic suppliers offering the best products and very good prices.
