Here is an option for intrepid self-drive photographers wanting to explore Namibia’s Namutoni region. There are 15 spotlessly-maintained spacious and shady campsites with private showers, running hot and cold water, power points, a swimming pool, restaurant, hide plus access to all the game drives and walks you can expect in a private game reserve, Tamboti Campsite could be the best campsite in Namibia. In fact, it’s much more than a campsite.

Tamboti is five hours drive from Windhoek near the Namutoni Game Reserve Etosha National Park in the heart of the Onguma Private Game Reserve. It is a great base from which to explore the eastern area of the park including Fischer’s Pan, but there are also many reasons why you would want to stay in the reserve for a day or two.

Tamboti’s renovated farmhouse is the heart of the camp with a wide stoep where generous leather armchairs invites you to relax and wait for zebra, kudu and other game that frequents the waterhole. The burgers, steaks and chicken schnitzel were all excellent – and the beer was cold. Why is it that beer always tastes better in Namibia? Tamboti even has wifi so you can catch up on your emails. There is a salt-water swimming pool, loungers and umbrellas, a restaurant and shop selling firewood, cold drinks and essentials.

Onguma’s 34 000 hectare reserve has a wet of well established luxury lodges including The dramatic Fort, elegant Tented Camp, quaint Treetops and secluded Aoba . Now for R200 a person (its R100 for children from 3 – 11 and under 3 kids stay free) Tamboti guests can access the same 34 000 hectares of the reserve plus enjoy the great facilities: morning and evening game drives through Etosha in open land rovers (R610 per person); bush walks (R370 per person) and night drives (R370 per person). I can also strongly recommend a trip to the excellent eye level photographic hide (R350 a person) for a low view of all manner of game.

Tamboti is 5-star rated on Trip Adviser and the comments in the visitor book such as “Best place in Namibia so far.” “Great game at the waterhole.” “People so friendly” are entirely deserved. The campsites are all really great with sites 4 to 6 offering great shade and privacy.
